Here are some offensive players the Cowboys could consider in free agency.
After naming Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, the Dallas Cowboys still have a lot of work to do filling out their coaching staff before free agency officially kicks off on March 12. Between now and then though, there will be a lot of guesstimating and speculating as to which free agents the Cowboys could potentially be targeting.
While Jerry Jones and Company have been more bargain shoppers in frequency the past few years, there is hope they could be more active signing outside help this year to help their new head coach with the roster-building process. With that in mind, we thought we’d identify one free agent they could consider signing at each position on offense.
QB – Cooper Rush
Cooper Rush’s familiarity with Brian Schottenheimer and his offensive scheme make him the favored free agent QB to backup Dak Prescott in 2025 once again. If there’s no bad blood between him and organization after missing out on his contract incentive in the season finale, he’s proven to be an asset as an injury fill-in time and time again with the Cowboys.
RB – Rico Dowdle
Once again familiarity is something the Cowboys seem to covet, making Rico Dowdle the logical free agent RB they should consider re-signing. Once he finally took over the lion’s share of the workload last year, he produced like one of the top RBs in the league in the latter part of the season. Pairing him with a rookie should upgrade Dallas’ rushing attack.
WR – Darius Slayton
Darius Slayton is someone the Cowboys should be very familiar with after playing against him the last six years. He is an explosive threat on all three levels of the field and has four seasons with at least 700 receiving yards on 15 yards per reception. Signing him would help Dallas avoid using a premium pick on WR in a weak draft class to help take pressure off of CeeDee Lamb.
TE – Mike Gesicki
While it’s highly unlikely the Cowboys sign a free agent tight end, especially considering the market is pretty thin at the position, if they do Mike Gesicki makes sense as someone who could bring something different to the table. Gesicki is more of a big slot receiver than he is a traditional TE and could immediately help the Cowboys with their red zone woes.
iOL – Will Fries
Dallas’ philosophy is to build their offensive line through the draft, but signing a plug-and-play right guard to replace Zack Martin is the quickest way to upgrade things. Will Fries has shown steady growth throughout his rookie contract playing RG for the Colts and could be exactly what the Cowboys need to upgrade and stabilize their OL for the foreseeable future.
OT – Tyron Smith
Re-signing Tyron Smith after year away with the New York Jets make sense for the Cowboys. After watching both Tyler Guyton and Terence Steele struggle last season, Smith could help stabilize the OT position in 2025. He’s still a capable starter and would be an ideal swing tackle or potential starter if Guyton or Steele continue to struggle next season.
