There’s been a stir in the pot for an important trade deadline acquisition, and now it’s not one, but two. That’s right, not only is Brayden Schenn looking to join a contender, but his brother Luke Schenn wants to come with. This is according to Elliotte Friedman from Saturday night’s Headlines on Hockey Night in Canada. That will be our theme for this edition of NHL Rumours. And as a reminder, all rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.
NHL Rumours
Who Can Attract the Schenn Brothers to Come to Town?
Rumour: Elliotte Friedman suggests that the NHL fraternity wants to see the brothers reunited for a cup run.
Analysis: Of course, neither player may be who they once were. In contrast, they are both very reliable players and hard to play against. You might say, the perfect package to bolster your post-season lineup. They both bring their own brand veteran leadership, and a player like Brayden Schenn can also chip in offensively, more so in a depth capacity.
Brayden has been in the rumour mill recently, that he is looking to be dealt to a winner. The Toronto Maple Leafs were seen as a potential frontrunner. It’s tough to say whether they would want both brothers. Luke was a long-time Leaf himself. However, there are plenty of other playoff-calibre teams interested in adding the pair of brothers. That is, if these NHL Rumours work out to reunite the Saskatoon boys. The brothers previously played together in Philly from 2013 to 2016.
Recapping their NHL Careers Thus Far
Having been named captain of the St. Louis Blues in 2023, if almost feels as though he has been a lifer with the Blues. He’s not, as he was acquired in a 2017 trade. He also spent time with the Los Angeles Kings and the Philadelphia Flyers throughout his NHL career. In all, he is a 16-year NHLer, and just three games shy of 1000 for his career.
Luke, on the other hand, is a 17-year vet and is up to over 1050 career games. He is currently playing for the Nashville Predators. In 55 games, he is up over 15 minutes a night. Also, he carries a salary cap hit of $2.75 until the end of 2025-26. Perhaps these NHL Rumours regarding the reunion of the brothers make sense before Luke hangs ’em up.
Brayden Schenn is a $6.5 million cap hit, and is signed until the end of 2027-28. With that kind of money on the line, not all playoff teams would be able to make the finances work. Some teams that have a few more dollars to spend than others include the Winnipeg Jets, the Vancouver Canucks, and the New York Rangers. Brayden being a centre is definitely a desired asset, perhaps like we recently discussed for the Washington Capitals as part of NHL Rumours.
They bring a tough, no-nonsense style of play. Luke is your typical rugged defenceman and has been known to among league leaders in hits. Brayden has been respected for his combo of grit and skill and leadership as well. Any team would welcome the duo, so let’s make these NHL rumours into reality.
