So who is on the Rangers 40 man roster right now?
The story that came out yesterday about the Texas Rangers being close to signing free agent pitcher Luis Curvelo to a major league deal got me thinking…who is still on the Texas Rangers 40 man roster right now?
So I went and looked, and lo and behold, there are 36 players currently on the Rangers’ 40 man roster. They are:

Assuming the Rangers do sign Curvelo to a major league deal, that would mean there are 37 players on the 40 man roster.
There are players who are likely going to be jettisoned at some point this offseason, but there’s no immediate need to drop anyone just yet. The first potential pressure point, if you will, is November 19, as that is the deadline to add players to the 40 man roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft.
Even then, however, it remains to be seen whether the Rangers will need to make moves to open up roster space for additions from the minors. Winston Santos and Emiliano Teodo would appear to be the only locks. Maximo Acosta, who was arguably a NP coming into 2024, had a strong 2024 season and has performed well in the Arizona Fall League, and guys who can function off the bench as a utility infielder are the types of players who tend to be protected, since they are easier to carry than, say, a 1B/DH who isn’t ready to hit major league pitching. And there are one or two others who could end up being protected as well.
In any case, if the Rangers are adding three or players in advance of the Rule 5 Draft, then they don’t have an issue. If they decide to add more than that, then they’ll have to clear some spots, though there are some obvious candidates who could be dropped — Carson Coleman, for example, the Rule 5 pick who will be out all of 2025, and then would need to be carried on the active roster in 2026 or exposed to waivers.
The next notable date, from a 40 man roster standpoint, is November 22. That’s the deadline by which teams have to tender a contract to players on the 40 man roster who are not currently under contract (in the Rangers’ case, everyone with under six years service time except Adolis Garcia). Along with the guys on the arbitration bubble, such as Leody Taveras, a player who is not arbitration-eligible, but who the team doesn’t want to risk exposing to waivers and seeing another team claim, could be non-tendered at that point. That is when we could see guys the Rangers would like to bring back on a minor league deal — say, Gerson Garabito or Sandro Fabian — dropped from the 40 man roster.
