Paul Skenes of the Pirates and Luis Gil of the Yankees have been named the N.L. and A.L. Rookie of the Year
Pitchers Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Luis Gil of the New York Yankees have been named the National League and American League Rookie of the Year, respectively.
Skenes received 23 of 30 first place votes, with Jackson Merrill of the San Diego Padres receiving the other seven, and Skenes and Merrill were the top two on all 30 ballots. Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers received 26 third place votes, and Shota Imanaga of the Chicago Cubs received four third place votes. They were the only four players to appear on a ballot in the National League.
In the American League, Gil received 15 first place votes, 10 second place votes, and one third place vote, giving him 106 points in all. That was barely enough to beat out Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser, who received 13 first place votes, 11 second place votes and three third place votes, for a total of 101 points.
Third place finisher Austin Wells received three second place votes and eight third place votes, giving him 17 points, one point ahead of Mason Miller of the A’s, who received a first place vote while appearing on eight total ballots. Cade Smith of the Guardians finished fifth and also received a first place vote. Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox finished sixth, while the Texas Rangers’ own Wyatt Langford finished seventh, getting a second place vote and four third place votes.
