Per the beats, Chris Young has announced that righthanded pitcher Alejandro Rosario will undergo elbow surgery
Texas Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year for 2024, Alejandro Rosario, will undergo elbow surgery and will miss the 2025 season, per Rangers president Chris Young (via the beats).
This is disappointing, though not altogether shocking, news. Rosario, the Rangers’ 5th round pick in 2023 out of the University of Miami, had a breakout 2024 campaign, putting up a 2.24 ERA in 88 innings between Down East and Hickory, with a 129:13 K:BB ratio. He is a consensus top 100 prospect in MLB, generally being slotted in the 40-80 range.
There were a couple of warning signs here, however. Rosario was promoted, along with Kohl Drake (who also had a breakout 2024, and was with Rosario at Down East and Hickory), to Frisco late in the 2024 season, but didn’t ever pitch for them, ultimately being shut down due to fatigue. Rosario also wasn’t an NRI this spring — probably the most surprising omission in Ranger camp.
Per the beats, Young said it was an acute issue while throwing a bullpen, and will likely require Tommy John surgery, though that isn’t definitive yet. If Rosario does require Tommy John surgery, a normal recovery timeline would have him back in late April or early May, 2026.
