Owen White has been sent to the Cincinnati Reds for cash considerations
The Texas Rangers have traded pitcher Owen White to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced today.
White was the Rangers’ second round draft pick in 2018 out of Carson High School in North Carolina. He didn’t pitch professionally until 2021, due to Tommy John surgery and then the pandemic, and he ended up injuring himself punching the mound in his first pro appearance in 2021 with Down East, resulting in two more months on the injured list.
When White got back on the mound, though, he looked very good, striking out double-digit batters in each of his final three starts of 2021 for Down East, then impressing in the Arizona Fall League. Physical issues limited him somewhat in 2022, but he put up a 3.59 ERA in 80 innings between high-A and AA, and was impressive enough to be on the top 100 prospect lists of Baseball America and MLB Pipeline heading until 2023.
Unfortunately, White wasn’t the same after that season. His stuff backed up, he put up a 5.41 ERA in 151 innings in AAA between 2023 and 2024, in his brief major league opportunities he got roughed up. When the Rangers needed to open up a roster spot for free agent reliever Hoby Milner last month, White ended up being designated for assignment to create a 40 man spot.
