The Texas Rangers have made it official, as they have named Bruce Bochy as their next manager. The announcement came on Friday afternoon, as he will become the 20th full-time manager in franchise history. The news of Bochy being named as the Rangers’ manager certainly comes as a shock. Everyone in baseball circles had a firm belief that Bochy was thoroughly enjoying his retirement. Apparently, he had other ideas. The Rangers are in agreement with Bruce Bochy on a three-year deal covering the 2023-25 seasons. This move comes after a disappointing 2022 campaign for the Rangers. They fired fourth-year manager Chris Woodward in mid-August, at which point longtime third base coach Tony Beasley took over as interim manager. They finished 2022 with a record of 68–94.
Bruce Bochy’s Resume
To say that Bruce Bochy has an established track record would be an understatement. He has led the San Francisco Giants to three World Series Championships. Bochy’s Giants won the World Series in 2010 (vs. Texas), 2012 (against the Detroit Tigers), and 2014 (against the Kansas City Royals). He is one of only five managers in history to lead a team to three titles in a five-year span. That list includes Connie Mack, Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, and Joe Torre. Bochy needs just 38 more wins to crack the top-ten in that category. His 2,003 wins as a manager in the major leagues are 12th-most in Major League history.
Switching Dugouts
This is just the third time an individual has ever been hired to manage a team which he had previously beaten as a manager in the World Series. As previously mentioned, the 2010 Giants beat the Rangers in the 2010 World Series. With 44 career postseason wins, Bochy ranks tied for sixth in history in that category. He has guided teams to eight postseason appearances, six division titles, four pennants, and three World Series championships. It will be very interesting to see what he does from his seat in the Rangers’ dugout.
