Yankees 3, Rangers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas, Oct 3 — The Texas Rangers lost a pitchers’ duel to the New York Yankees on Monday night by a final score of 3–1. Sadly, baseball fans everywhere also have to wait at least another day for outfielder Aaron Judge to hit home run No. 62. The only hit Judge had on Monday was a single in the early innings. The Rangers and Yankees will play a split doubleheader on Tuesday. The first game of the day-night doubleheader will start at 1:05 PM Central at Globe Life Field. Right-hander Jameson Taillon (14–5, 3.83 ERA) will start that game for the Yankees. The Rangers will send Jon Gray (7–7, 3.93 ERA) to the mound in the matinee.
Yankees’ Offense
The Rangers and Yankees battled in a scoreless tie until the top of the fifth inning. Aaron Hicks scored their first run on a single to left field by Kyle Higashioka. Three more innings would pass, however, before they scored again. Outfielder Marwin Gonzalez made it 2–0 Yankees with a solo home run to right field in the top of the eighth inning.
Two batters later, Yankees DH Giancarlo Stanton hit another solo shot to make it 3–0 Yankees. The Rangers, meanwhile, only managed to push across one run on Monday evening. It wasn’t the most dramatic run, as Josh Jung scored on a groundout by Kole Calhoun, making the score 3–1 in favor of the Yankees.

Martin Perez
Rangers left-hander Martin Perez got the ball on Monday. Perez took a tough-luck loss in his final start of the year. He held the Yankees to just one run (earned) over six innings. He exited trailing 1–0 at the end of the sixth inning. Perez was also the beneficiary from five of six double plays turned by the Rangers on Monday, as he worked around a season high-tying five walks (also 8/14 against the Seattle Mariners).
He finished the 2022 campaign with team-high 12 wins (12–8 record), and career-low 2.89 ERA (63 ER/195 2/3 IP) over 32 starts. It is the eighth-lowest qualifying ERA in club history, and second-lowest in the last 31 seasons (beg. 1992) to only Yu Darvish’s 2.83 ERA in 2013. Pérez did not allow a home run over his last eight starts of the season. He finished with a 0.51 HR/9 figure that ranks as the 12th-lowest in club history. The last qualifying Texas pitcher to post a lower HR/9 mark over a single season was C.J. Wilson in 2010 (0.44).
Yankees Pitching Notes
Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino was lifted from the game after holding the Rangers hitless through seven innings. Miguel Castro proceeded to give up two hits in the eighth inning. It marked the longest hitless outing of Severino’s career. The seven shutout innings tied his longest outing of the season and was his longest on the road (also 5/22 against the Chicago White Sox, and 6/4 against the Detroit Tigers). His three outings with 7+ shutout innings are tied with Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes for the club lead, as Monday was the 12th such individual outing by a Yankee in 2022. He also tied the longest scoreless outing at Globe Life Field this season (done by three Rangers: Dunning, Gray, Pérez) and posted the longest by an opponent. He also earned his 50th career win.
Double Plays
The Rangers turned six double plays on Monday. It matched the club record for a single game done just twice previously (also 4/15/11 against the Yankees, and 8/2/06 against the Minnesota Twins). Second baseman Marcus Semien was involved in all six of the twin-killings. This tied the Texas record for double plays by an individual player (Mitch Moreland on 4/15/11). It also tied the major league record for double plays turned by a second baseman in a single game.
