The Texas Rangers announced that they have designated lefty Dallas Keuchel for assignment. The news was first reported by Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on Sunday. As a corresponding roster move, the Rangers have called up fellow lefty John King from Triple-A Round Rock. Hoping to add more depth to their pitching staff, the Rangers signed Keuchel to a minor league contract in late July. The Rangers selected his contract to the major league roster on August 27. He is not the first player that the Rangers have had to cut ties with this year. The Rangers designated outfielder Willie Calhoun for assignment on June 5.
Tough Year for Dallas Keuchel
The Rangers were the third stop for the 34-year old lefty in 2022. Earlier this season, Dallas Keuchel was released by the Chicago White Sox, and the Arizona Diamondbacks soon after. Considering the move was low-risk from a financial standpoint, the Rangers decided to make the gamble. His struggles continued in Arlington in the late weeks of Summer.
In ten innings in a Rangers uniform, Keuchel posted an earned run average of 12.60. That translates into seven runs allowed in his two outings as a member of the Rangers. Given those types of results, it is fair to say that the Dallas Keuchel experiment was unsuccessful for the Rangers. This year, Keuchel has a 9.20 ERA over 60 2/3 cumulative innings with the Rangers, Diamondbacks, and White Sox.
What’s Next?
It’s never easy to adjust to a new team. Perhaps that was the issue for Dallas Keuchel. The D’Backs and Rangers only had to pay Keuchel the prorated portion of a major league minimum salary during his brief time on their active rosters, as the White Sox covered the rest of the bill. That translates into $13 million for 2022. He was originally signed to a three-year $55 million contract by the White Sox at the beginning of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Time will tell if he finds a new team to pitch for in the final weeks of the season.
