The Rangers have declined their team option on Andrew Chafin for the 2025 season
The Texas Rangers have declined their $6.5 million club option on pitcher Andrew Chafin for the 2025 season, the team announced today. Instead, they are paying Chafin a $500,000 buyout of that option, and Chafin is now a free agent.
The 34 year old lefty reliever was acquired by the Rangers at the trade deadline from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor league pitchers Chase Lee and Joseph Montalvo. He put up a 4.19 ERA and 5.44 FIP in 19.1 innings over 21 appearances for Texas. For the year, Chafin put up a 3.51 ERA and 3.54 FIP in 56 innings over 62 games.
There seemed to be a good chance that Chafin’s option would be declined when the Rangers acquired him over the summer, and his struggles upon joining the Rangers made that more likely. Chafin is probably looking at a one year deal this offseason for around $5 million.
