The Rangers have added three players to their 40 man roster today
The Texas Rangers announced today that they have purchased the contacts of pitchers Emiliano Teodo and Winston Santos and infielder Maximo Acosta. In addition, the team announced that 2023 Rule 5 selection Carson Coleman has been returned to the New York Yankees, from whom he was drafted, presumably after clearing waivers. With those transactions, the 40 man roster now stands at 39.
Today was the deadline to add players to the 40 man roster in advance of the Rule 5 Draft, which takes place on December 11. We ran down who all might be added on Friday, and I predicted at the time that Teodo, Santos, Acosta and lefthanded pitcher Bryan Magdaleno would be added. Teodo and Santos were locks, and there was some thought the Rangers might only add those two players, though Acosta, Magdaleno, Josh Stephan, and a couple of others had cases to be added.
As for Coleman, he was a righthanded reliever who the Rangers selected from the New York Yankees last year in the Rule 5 Draft. He was recuperating from Tommy John surgery, and was expected to be back in the middle of 2024, but a setback in his recovery meant that he missed all of 2024 and would miss at least some, and possibly all, of 2025. Given that the Rangers were still going to have to carry him on the active roster for a while if and when he was ready to pitch again, it seemed to be a given that Coleman would be dropped from the 40 man roster and offered back to the Yankees.
