Sam Huff is now a member of the San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants have claimed catcher Sam Huff on waivers from the Texas Rangers, it was announced today.
Thus ends Sam Huff’s tenure with the Rangers.
Huff, who turns 27 later this month, with a 7th round pick of the Rangers in 2016. The report on him from the get go was that he had big power and a big arm, but also swing and miss issues and questions about whether he would have the defensive chops to stick behind the plate.
That is still more or less the book on him at this point. He has had issues staying healthy, which has limited the amount of professional reps behind the plate he has gotten, but also resulted in him getting a fourth option last year. The team didn’t seem to believe in his glove enough to give an opportunity in the big leagues, and his bat regressed, as he slashed .246/.310/.416 for Round Rock.
Huff was designated for assignment to make room for Shawn Armstrong on the 40 man roster last month. He is out of options, so if he doesn’t make the Giants major league roster out of spring training, he will have to be put on waivers again in order to be sent down.
