One veteran NRI has been released and another has been re-signed
The Texas Rangers announced yesterday that veteran infielder Nick Ahmed, who was in camp on a minor league deal, was granted his released. In addition, the team announced that veteran reliever Hunter Strickland, who was released on Friday, was re-signed to a minor league deal.
Ahmed split the 2024 season between the Giants, the Dodgers and the Padres, after having spent his entire career prior to that with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ahmed is a shortstop who hasn’t hit much the last few years, and didn’t seem to have a realistic path towards a roster spot with the Rangers absent injuries. He now will see if there’s another team out there willing to give him a major league deal, although the Rangers reportedly would like to have him stay and play at Round Rock.
Strickland was signed two weeks ago, which is very late to have an opportunity to grab a roster spot. He presumably will be part of the Round Rock bullpen to start 2025.
