Could a Dallas Cowboys future head coaching candidate be visiting the stadium on Monday night?
The only thing we really know about the Dallas Cowboys right now is they will be looking for a new head coach after the completion of the 2024 NFL season. Whether Mike McCarthy retains his head coaching duties throughout that time matters very little, because the search for his replacement should already be underway.
Jerry Jones and Company should leave no stone unturned in their quest to find their next head coach. Whether it’s a young up-and-coming candidate or a proven commodity as a head coach, the Cowboys brass needs to be diligent in their search to find the right fit to make this organization a serious contender in the league once again.
While there is no shortage of potential head coaching candidates to comb through this offseason, the Cowboys could be hosting one of their top choices in this Week 11 matchup with Houston Texans. After just a year and a half as the Texans offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowik is someone to keep an eye on as a Mike McCarthy replacement.
Bobby Slowik’s coaching background
- Washington Redskins defensive assistant (2011-2013)
- Pro Football Focus Senior analyst (2014-2016)
- San Francisco 49ers defensive quality control coach (2017-2018)
- San Francisco 49ers offensive assistant (2019-2020)
- San Francisco 49ers offensive pass game specialist (2021)
- San Francisco 49ers offensive passing game coordinator (2022)
- Houston Texans offensive coordinator (2003-present)
With his coaching background on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, as well as his work as an analyst for Pro Football Focus, Bobby Slowik is an intriguing up-and-coming head coach candidate for the Dallas Cowboys.
Why he could be a top HC candidate for the Dallas Cowboys
There’s a lot of reasons why Bobby Slowik could be a top candidate to replace Mike McCarthy as the Cowboys next head coach. He’s a young, innovative offensive mind with a background as a defensive coach, he’s from the highly successful Shanahan coaching tree, and most importantly his scheme would be a great fit for Dak Prescott and Company.
The trend of hiring young head coaches around the league could actually work in Slowik’s favor as a top candidate for the Cowboys. Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, Kevin O’Connell, and DeMeco Ryans are just a few examples of young HCs who found early success, and at just 37 years old, Slowik has the ability to join that group. His coaching background on offense, defense, and even as an analyst make him somewhat unique and intriguing.
Being from the highly successful Shanahan coaching tree could also work in his favor. This could be one of those “if you can’t beat them, join them” kind of hires for the Cowboys. The Shanahan scheme has been an absolute nightmare for Dallas’ defense over the years. So, what better way to combat that than to run the same system to learn all of the ins and outs, from both an offense of and defensive perspective. Sounds like a win-win, right!?
And if you have any questions or concerns about what he could do for Dak Prescott and Company, look no further than the offense he was able to coordinate for rookie C.J. Stroud and how he’s continue to add to it in Year 2. Stroud is one of the best young QBs around the league right now and has been able to accomplish that with the help of Slowik behind one of the worst offensive lines both this year and last.
Also, look at how he’s been able to tap into WR Nico Collins’ talent. Before Slowik arrived in Houston, Collins never had more than 500 receiving yards in his first two years in the NFL. He exploded on the scene though in 2023 with 1,297 receiving yards in his first year with Slowik. He already has 567 receiving yards in just five games and should have his second consecutive 1,000 receiving yard season. Imagine what he could do with CeeDee Lamb?
Because of all of that, Bobby Slowik is definitely someone to keep an eye on as a potential head coaching candidate in not only the Week 11 matchup between the Cowboys and Texans, but for the remainder of the season as well. Then you can decide for yourselves if you’d like to see him take over for Mike McCarthy next season.
