Troy Aikman did not hold back on the Dallas Cowboys when talking about them moving on from Mike McCarthy.
The Dallas Cowboys chose to move on from Mike McCarthy on Monday and in the process finally pushed over a domino on the 2025 season and beyond.
There were certainly plenty of people who wanted to see this reality, although it stands to reason that they wanted it done in a more effective manner. Dallas waited over a week into the offseason to move on and in the process significantly complicated the search for his successor. It was, unfortunately, another questionable decision in a long line of them that the franchise has been making as of late.
Many people have grown tired of watching the Cowboys act the way that they have for the last year and beyond. One of those people isn’t a fan in the conventional sense, but a former player and current NFL commentator. Troy Aikman has spoken out many times in the name of Mike McCarthy and has never been shy about criticizing his former team.
Aikman is a part of ESPN and was on air ahead of Monday night’s game between the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings. He was asked about what the Cowboys did and did not hold back.
Troy Aikman on the Dallas Cowboys: “I thought Mike McCarthy would be the head coach, so this is a bit of a surprise for me today… It suggests that there’s not a real plan… To say that it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that.” ️#NFL pic.twitter.com/M6cmb1dOaO

Aikman noted that it is difficult for a football coach to do football things for the Cowboys. He acknowledged that it is a high-profile position (being the team’s head coach), but that he would not necessarily agree with the idea that it is a coveted one.
There was cause for Dallas to move on from Mike McCarthy. Such cause existed this time a year ago. But the Cowboys went about the 2024 season in an incredibly chaotic way and asked McCarthy to navigate it all. There were things he underperformed on, but it is hard to argue that anyone would have thrived in the circumstances the team placed him in. While he is no longer part of the organization, how they went about his departure runs chalk with that pattern of behavior. Troy Aikman is calling it out.
