When a coach gets released, sometimes several other firings quickly follow. But there are other moments when teams have phenomenal coaches that simply can’t be let go of. After a rough season, the Dallas Cowboys find themselves in that exact same position. No matter what happens to Mike McCarthy, there are three coaches that need to be retained by the organization.
These Three Dallas Cowboys Coaches Must Stay with the Organization
Mike Solari – Offensive Line Coach
After a very shaky start with two rookie offensive linemen in Cooper Beebe and Tyler Guyton, Mike Solari managed to get this offensive line to produce at an incredible rate. For the first time since 2019, the Cowboys had a running back rush for over 100 yards in four or more games. A majority of that success comes from how well the offensive line made space for the run game.
The Cowboys have the capability to keep a great run offense in the years to come. Part of that possibility comes from how well the offensive line continues to play. If they want someone who can create really good linemen no matter how many injuries they’re subject to, they have to keep Solari. After a beaten-up season, Solari still had one of his guys make the Pro Bowl – Tyler Smith. With the need to diversify their offense, the Cowboys need some stability in trying new things. They’ll only achieve that by keeping Solari around.
This Dallas Cowboys Coach Shaped Two Pro Bowl Players This Season
Another coach who had a phenomenal season is none other than John Fassel. Fassel managed to help his players successfully adjust to the new kickoff rules. In fact, Fassel is responsible for the play that allowed one of the only recovered onside kicks this year. The Cowboys also led the league in average yards per kick return, ranked second in return yards, and were the only team with more than one touchdown on kickoffs. Fassel, Brandon Aubrey, and the rest of the special teams squad also managed to rank second in field goals made.
A big part of that success comes from the incredible leg of Brandon Aubrey and the speed and skill of KaVontae Turpin. However, the ability to strategically plan for moments that highlight both of these players goes back to Fassel. It’s a creativity that the Cowboys will need to continue going forward. Many of the games this season were decided in the Special Teams play. The pattern is sure to continue into the future. Which means that Fassel will need to be there in order to make the most out of it.
The Dallas Cowboys Coach with the Most Questions – Al Harris
Harris won’t get as much credit as the other two coaches in the argument to keep him around. While Fassel and Solari saw Pro Bowl players, Harris didn’t. But most of that wasn’t his fault. Very early into training camp, Harris lost DaRon Bland to injury. Later, he would see the absence of Trevon Diggs yet again as another knee injury ended his season early. Yet, the core of the cornerback room remained incredibly solid.
Harris is the most difficult coach on this list because he could want control over the entire defense. That could mean that he leaves Dallas to run his own program somewhere else. If the Cowboys renew Zimmer, that becomes even more of a reality. Letting go of Harris changes the dynamic of the backfield. Although hit with several injuries just like Solari, Harris maintained pretty high expectations for his guys. Without Harris, the team will struggle in the cornerback room, no matter what kind of talent they find back there.
No matter who the head coach is chosen to be for the Cowboys, it’s certain that these three coaches should be somewhere in the mix.
