“Next man up” is a commonly uttered phrase when a player needs replacing. Whether it’s injury, free agency, retirement or a release that’s pushing Player A out the door, the logical solution is Player B seamlessly filling the recently vacated role.
When Michael Gallup was let go in the 2024 offseason, the next man up appeared to be third-year player Jalen Tolbert. Tobert, a former third round pick, is the Cowboys’ highest drafted player save for starters CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks, both first-round picks. After a rocky rookie season, Tolbert showed major promise in his second year with Dallas and seems primed for yet another step forward in 2024. As such, he’s the obvious solution to replace Gallup at WR3.
But maybe searching for Player B is the wrong way to look at the WR situation in Dallas. Maybe potential can get maximized if the answer isn’t a single player but rather a committee of players. Given the young and unproven nature of the Cowboys WR room this season, it may not just be more efficient, but also more realistic.
