The Dallas Cowboys are rapidly approaching a crossroads with star quarterback Dak Prescott.
Unless they reach some sort of contract adjustment or extension with him in the next few months, they’ll be forced to release or trade Prescott before the start of the 2025 NFL league year. For Cowboys executive Stephen Jones, there’s a clear goal for Dak moving forward.
Speaking to Dianna Russini on the Scoop City podcast, Jones made it clear that the goal is to keep Dak in Dallas for the long term.
“The answer to that question is that we are optimistic that we can get these guys done,” Jones said. “He knows that. We’re having conversations with his agent and Dak, personally. Both Jerry and I. He knows our goal is to keep him here.”
Jones acknowledged that many NFL teams have to make sacrifices in order to keep their “high-priced quarterbacks” and cited the success that the Kansas City Chiefs have had since trading star wideout Tyreek Hill.
“We know what happens to teams when they have these high-priced quarterbacks at some point it’s a challenge to keep everybody,” Jones said. “The Chiefs are an example of that but they were able to survive not keeping Tyreek Hill and let some other top players, I think they let one of the top corners go after this season. You have to make some tough choices along the way. But we’re optimistic that we can do that. We’ll continue to grind away.”
How the Cowboys intend to do that without also hamstringing their Super Bowl chances in 2023 remains a big mystery though.
