The Cowboys could reportedly hire Brian Schottenheimer before Friday is over.
The Dallas Cowboys have been looking for a new head coach for almost two weeks now. To date they have conducted four formal interviews and they have been with Kellen Moore, Robert Saleh, Leslie Frazier and Brian Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer was the last of the four to get interviewed and had his overall candidacy kind of pop up out of nowhere. On the Monday morning after the Divisional Round he appeared as the betting favorite for the job without having even interviewed yet. By day’s end he had done so, and before Thursday he had even interviewed a second time, the only candidate to date to do so.
It is important to note that after completing the Saleh and Frazier interviews that the Cowboys were in compliance with the Rooney Rule which meant they could have made a decision from that point forward. Apparently that moment could be coming very soon, before the business week is even concluded. DLLS’ Clarence Hill noted on Thursday morning that the hiring is expected to happen before Friday is over.
Look for the Cowboys to cross the finish line on hiring Brian Schottenheimer no later than Friday, possibly today

The timing here is important in an overall sense because the collegiate all-star games are getting set to kick off and the Cowboys, like all NFL teams, need to have a presence at them and an overall plan. to begin legitimate steps towards the 2025 season. Nothing is impossible and they could certainly navigate life if they didn’t have a head coach, the New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars are all still looking for head coaches at the moment as well, but it goes without saying that you want to have this sort of thing taken care of.
This time last week it really seemed like Kellen Moore was going to be the person we were talking about in this sense, but that steam has been seriously lost. For what it’s worth, Ed Werder noted that the team did not necessarily take their interview the distance with Moore. Perhaps things did not go well. Shout out to DLLS’ Joe Hoyt for finding this, by the way.
Interesting nugget from @WerderEdNFL on today’s @DC_MediaMash: the Cowboys didn’t use all three hours permitted in their Kellen Moore interview.

Who knows why the Cowboys are charging ahead. Maybe there is some other reason that they will unveil in the future. Whatever the case there is an enormous amount of smoke building here and it seems inevitable that Brian Schottenheimer is going to be the 10th coach in franchise history.
Buckle up.
