Quarterback bust Trey Lance future may be in turmoil and the Saints, Panthers may be the next best possible teams. According to multiple reports, the Cowboys are not starting Lance over second-stringer Cooper Rush to no surprise as he’s been around longer. However, patience is wearing thin for Lance since arriving in a trade from the 49ers last season but if he doesn’t get the opportunity in Dallas, he could get it elsewhere in a new roster. Lance has not made much progress in Dallas despite being a part of the preseason mix this year.
Originally selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, the North Dakota State product didn’t produce what the 49ers were looking for until Brock Purdy took over Kyle Shanahan’s offense for the long-term future. Any notion of him being a starter in Dallas may never come since the Cowboys extended Dak Prescott for the next couple of years. However, Lance is ready to step in for Rush if he needs to which may raise his value for any team that might want to acquire him in 2025 free agency.
Despite that, Rush being 5-1 as a starter probably won’t allow Dallas to give Lance a legitimate chance. Anything could change the next couple of weeks and Lance would only be playing to show other teams that he’s still a reliable signal-caller in the league.

Saving the Saints
New Orleans had high expectations coming into this season with Derek Carr in the driver’s seat. However, Dennis Allen was on the burning side of turmoil leading the Saints to fire him. After a strong 2-0 start, the team was aiming for a wild-card spot despite the minimal slew of wideouts, including Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. However, there’s no word if Olave will return so this spells bad news for the offense’s long-term future.
Carr may not be back in 2025 and even though they have rookie Spencer Rattler to step in, there’s no guarantee he’s ready for a full-time role. Rattler didn’t produce much of anything but it may not be his fault since the absence of Shaheed and releasing A.T. Perry didn’t put him in the best position. Lance may never be riding hot like he was in his college days but he could be an effective No. 2 quarterback behind Rattler. This might give him the spotlight he’s looking for if Rattler is unproductive.
A New Experiment?
The Panthers walked in this season in hopes of turning around the disastrous 2023 season they had with Bryce Young. However, things didn’t pan out as Carolina went with their gut to start Andy Dalton. As much as they were trying to save their season, they almost went on a firesale after trading Diontae Johnson. It’ll be a while to build a new roster behind rookie Xavier Legette but someone like Dalton is nothing more but a bridge quarterback.
He is no long-term starter since he’s aging so he didn’t produce the results that Panthers were looking for. However, the early switch at quarterback this season should be an indication that they’ll be looking for a new one. Lance might not be effective for a couple of games but he can keep this team competitive long enough before a new starter steps in for the team.
