With the Dallas Cowboys searching for Mike McCarthy’s replacement for their head coaching position, rumors have been swirling in Jerry world. Here is the latest scoop surrounding the Cowboys vacancy.
Latest Dallas Cowboys Coaching Rumors
Perhaps the most desired head coaching job in the world, the Dallas Cowboys are once again looking for a new leader. Over the past 24 hours, rumors have started swirling surrounding University of Colorado coach Deion Sanders and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Both of these coaches are intriguing candidates for the open Cowboys position
Coach Prime
Deion Sanders, also known as “Coach Prime”, is an extremely intriguing candidate for Dallas. Sanders is a former NFL superstar, including from 1995-1999 for the Cowboys. Currently, Sanders is the coach at the University of Colorado, leading them to a 9 win season last year. Sanders has no NFL coaching experience however, he has shown that he can lead a locker room and turn teams around.
He started his coaching career in 2020 at Jackson State University, where he led the team to a 4-3 record. In the two following years, Sanders led Jackson State to records of 11-2 and 12-1. Sanders was then hired at the University of Colorado, where he saw a similar turnaround. In Sanders first season at Colorado, the team had a 4-8 record. Last year, Colorado went 9-4. Sanders has proven he can turn around losing teams and build winners. Sanders has proven to have the ability to coach elite talent. He coached and developed two projected top five picks in the upcoming draft, his son Shedeur Sanders, and heisman trophy winner Travis Hunter.
Potential Flaws With Sanders
Although Sanders has overseen multiple great turnarounds at the collegiate level, the NFL is a different beast. Sanders would have to manage and lead a locker room of men, which is a much different task than college students. Also, it is no secret Sanders has a big personality and frankly ego. Owner Jerry Jones loves to have control over the franchise, and this could cause issues with Sanders. Sanders will also very likely force Jones’ hand to draft quarterback Shedeur Sanders, his son. This would be a major decision for the future of the Cowboys franchise.
Cowboys Interested In Their Former Offensive Coordinator
The Dallas Cowboys have also been linked to Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Moore was previously the Cowboys offensive coordinator, from 2019-2023. The Eagles offense has seen success with Moore this season, particularly on the ground. Philadelphia ranked second in rushing yards per game this season, with 179.3. The Eagles also averaged 27.2 points per game, which was good for seventh-best in the league.
It’s also worth noting that Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had his two best statistical seasons with Moore. Prescott threw for 4,449 yards, 37 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, a completion percentage of 68.8%, and a quarterback rating of 104.2. In 2023, he had another stellar season, throwing for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, with a completion percentage of 69.5%, and a quarterback rating of 105.9. If the Dallas Cowboys are fully committed to Dak Prescott for the future, they should take a long look at Moore, as he brings out the best in Prescott.
Moore’s Limitations
Although a great offensive mind, Kellen Moore doesn’t have any head coaching experience. This can bode poorly for coaches sometimes, specifically coordinators who have most of their experience on one side of the ball. Although Moore could rejuvenate the Cowboys offense, Dallas’ defense struggled mightily last year. Moore would need to have great defensive minds in his ear if he were to be hired in Jerry world.
What Lies Ahead
Jerry Jones and Dallas will not be in a big rush to make a decision. There are still other candidates being considered besides these two. If Jones wants a proven head coach who can build a culture, and he doesn’t mind drafting Shedeur Sanders, Deion Sanders may very well be his guy. However, Jones may want to hire a proven offensive mind, in which case Kellen Moore could be the new head coach in Dallas. Buckle up because the rumors surrounding the Cowboys head coaching vacancy are heating up.
