There are two Mike McCarthys. The first Mike McCarthy is the regular season coach, who aside from the COVID-19 season where he lost his franchise QB five games into the season, has been the most consistent winner Dallas has seen since Jimmy Johnson. The other Mike McCarthy has suffered through several un-glorious playoff defeats, including last year’s home blowout loss to Green Bay and a prior defeat to San Francisco where he admitted his team was a bundle of nerves.
Apparently he was unaware of how to get his team mentally prepared for the challenges. And because those two versions of McCarthy are in direct contrast with each other, he was brought back for his fifth season but he does not have an extension to remain the coach of the Cowboys. He’s one of many enigmatic head coaches across the league, only he does have a Super Bowl victory on his resume.
