Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his contract, putting some uncertainty around his future.
The Cowboys have indicated in the past they’d like to keep Prescott long-term, but thus far, the two sides have not agreed to a new deal. Should the three-time Pro Bowler explore free agency next offseason, he’ll likely field extremely lucrative offers.
On Get Up this week, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg made it clear that he thinks Prescott should at least test the waters on the open market.
“The answer to the question of whether this will be his last season is that it’s entirely up to him, and that’s the best possible position for someone to be in,” Greenberg said, via On3. “He would be crazy to sign a contract now.”
Greenberg’s colleague Damien Woody said he wouldn’t sleep on Prescott re-signing with Dallas because of the “allure” of playing for America’s Team, but added that the veteran signal caller could guarantee himself a massive contract with his play, wherever that may be.
“This is all on Dak Prescott,” Woody said. “I’m not saying that the Dallas Cowboys can’t re-sign Dak Prescott but he has all the leverage. If he goes out there and balls like he did last year, he was like runner-up for MVP, he’s going to be in the $60 million range. Easy as a quarterback.”
Prescott, 30, is coming off his third Pro Bowl selection, as he passed for 4,516 passing yards and 36 touchdowns while leading the Cowboys to a 12-5 record and NFC East title.
However, Dallas came up short in the postseason once again, losing to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card game.
