The Dallas Cowboys will reportedly interview Brian Schottenheimer for their head coach vacancy.
It was noted on Monday morning that Brian Schottenheimer, coming off of a two-year stint as the Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator, was the betting favorite to become the team’s next head coach.
This was a bit strange as Schottenheimer had not been seriously connected to the process at all during last week, the first week that Dallas even began said search. When Monday began there were five other teams also looking for head coaches – Chicago landed Ben Johnson later in the day – and Schottenheimer has not been at all connected to those openings.
It is now a potential reality for Dallas as it was reported that Schottenheimer is going to interview with the team. Maybe Las Vegas knows a thing or two.
The #Cowboys are expected to interview their own OC Brian Schottenheimer for their vacant head coaching job, per me and @SlaterNFL.
Well-respected in the building, Schottenheimer has been an OC for more than a decade. Intriguing option to take the next step. pic.twitter.com/1Kz3txHFZL

The Cowboys are interested in Schottenheimer for their own reasons. They have noted that they were a fan of his even though he did not call plays during his two years as OC. Keep in mind that they have also spoken kindly about defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and that it was noted by ESPN that they would have liked to have kept special teams coordinator John Fassel, who joined the Tennessee Titans on Monday afternoon.
If you liked all of your coordinators that much then wouldn’t it have made sense to keep the head coach in charge of them all? This conversation isn’t meant to re-litigate the Mike McCarthy discussion, but it all shines a light on how backwards this process feels.
Schottenheimer is expected to be the fourth interview that Dallas conducts. The other three to date are Kellen Moore, Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier.
