There are some interesting names the Cowboys could look to target in free agency.
Whether it’s out of envy watching the Philadelphia Eagles play in the Super Bowl or out of need, there is reason to believe the Dallas Cowboys could be much more active in free agency than they have in years past. Maybe this is the year they go “all in”, unlike last year.
Considering all of the current “needs” they have, the Cowboys can’t simply rely on building their roster through the 2025 NFL Draft. They will have to address a few of those “needs” via free agency, but who those players may be is the ultimate unknown right now.
Today, we thought we’d have a little fun and remove all restraints by putting together a wish list of free agents the Cowboys to target in order to upgrade the offensive side of the ball. As unlikely as it is a sign anyone from this list, we still have our fingers crossed.
QB – Justin Fields

With Dak Prescott working his way back from a season-ending hamstring injury, and with Will Grier currently the only other QB on the roster, finding a new backup QB would be a wise move to make on the Cowboys part. Justin Fields, a former first-round draft pick, is only 25 years old and went 4-2 as a starter last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He could be an ideal QB2 in Dallas.
Projected contract via PFF: 1 yr., $11m avg/yr. ($11m guaranteed, $11m total)
RB – J.K. Dobbins

Running back is arguably the Cowboys biggest roster “need” right now and why they are projected by some mocks to draft RB Ashton Jeanty with the 12th overall pick in the first-round. If they choose to go the free agency route though, J.K. Dobbins is a player to target. His injury history is well documented, but when healthy he’s proven he can be a highly productive RB in the league. Signing him as a free agent could allow Dallas to wait a little later in the draft to take advantage of the deep RB draft class.
Projected contract via PFF: 2 yrs, $3.5m avg/yr. ($4m guaranteed, $7m total)
WR – Stefon Diggs

Together at last in Dallas? Stefon and Trevon Diggs would love nothing more than to play together with the Cowboys and as fate would have it it could be mutually beneficial for all parties concerned. Dallas needs to upgrade the WR2 position behind CeeDee Lamb and Stefon has the talent to do just that. He is coming off a season-ending knee injury, but is expected to be back to 100% for training camp. His ability to be a threat in the passing game at all three levels of the field would be a significant upgrade to Dallas’ aerial attack.
Projected contract via PFF: 1 yr, $16m avg/yr. ($16m guaranteed, $16m total)
OT – Alaric Jackson

Neither Tyler Guyton or Terence Steele had a very good season last year and finding an upgrade have either left or right tackle could be a top priority for the Cowboys this offseason. Signing Alaric Jackson would actually kill two birds with one stone. He could immediately step in to be the new blindside and Guyton could then replace Steele at RT, the position he played at Oklahoma and one he’s probably more comfortable with. Steele then could become a post-June 1 salary-cap casualty, saving the Cowboys $14 million.
Projected contract via PFF: 4 yrs, $14.5m avg/yr. ($37.5m guaranteed, $58m total)
OG – Trey Smith

Protecting Dak Prescott, the highest-paid player in the league, has to be one of the Cowboys top priorities, if not the top priority, moving forward. And, if they are serious about improving the running game, then finding Zack Martin’s replacement at RG if he retires is something they should focus on. By signing Trey Smith via free agency they would accomplish all that. He still just 25 years old and and is the best OG on the open market. He is a plug-and-play starter at RG and would help solidify Dallas’ OL for years to come.
Project contract via PFF: 4 yrs, $20.5m avg/yr. ($50m guaranteed, $82m total)
