Whether or not Dak Prescott finally gets the Dallas Cowboys over the hump and into the NFC Championship Game next year, he could make some noteworthy history for America’s Team in 2024.
According to Blogging The Boys, Dak could become the Cowboys’ all-time leader in passing yards this season, passing Tony Romo’s mark of 34,183 yards. Dak’s current mark is 29,459, meaning he needs 4,723 yards to break the record.
Sandwiched between Romo and Dak is Hall of Famer and three-time Super Bowl champion Troy Aikman, who has 32,942. Dak needs less than 3,500 yards to break that mark.
So what is the likelihood that Dak actually breaks the record this year? Well for starters he would need to average around 278 yards per game – something he has done three times in his career and twice in a full season.
2019 was the one year in which Dak actually reached that mark, throwing for 4,902 yards, albeit in an 8-8 season.
One could argue that breaking the record might come at the expense of winning games, because teams tend to give up lots of yards when they’re leading, while the Cowboys might rest Dak if they find themselves comfortably ahead in a game.
By many accounts, 2024 is likely to be Dak Prescott’s final season with the Cowboys. His contract is just too expense for the team to keep him on the books beyond this year and he’ll probably hit free agency.
Will Dak make some more history before he says goodbye to Big D?
