With Dak Prescott’s cap number becoming far too big for the Dallas Cowboys to take on, the team has to work with Dak on some kind of contract extension or restructure in order to save themselves. But while Dak’s next contract is expected to be big, one insider wants to make it clear that Dak won’t force it to be that big.
Taking to X on Friday, Dallas Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. dismissed a recent rumor that Dak is seeking upwards of $60 million. He said that while it is what Dak could get on the open market, he has not asked the Cowboys for that much in the ongoing negotiations.
“Dak Prescott has not asked for $60 million from the Cowboys. That is what he possibly could command on the market. Those are two different things. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk,” Hill wrote.
Yesterday the Jacksonville Jaguars set the new going rate for a quarterback when they gave Trevor Lawrence a contract extension worth upwards of $275 million. That extension certainly means that the next big contract for a franchise quarterback will be in the high-50s and maybe even the low-60s.
Dak remains a very polarizing player due to his postseason disappointments in spite of putting up regular season numbers that are on par with Patrick Mahomes.
Ironically, those postseason struggles could enable Dak to reset the market on quarterbacks. If he doesn’t lead Dallas to a deep playoff run in 2024, he could be a free agent in 2025 – enabling another team to give him a massive contract to try and do for them what he couldn’t do for Dallas.
How much do you think Dak will get in his next contract?
