The Dallas Cowboys have a plan for how they’ll use their running backs for the upcoming 2024 season.
Head coach Mike McCarthy is going to use his running backs by committee. It won’t just be one guy taking all of the carries.
“Two or three [backs], whatever it takes,” McCarthy said, via ESPN.
Ezekiel Elliott is expected to be RB1 for this season but the spots behind him look to be up for grabs. Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, and Royce Freeman will all be vying for playing time this season.
The Cowboys brought Elliott back for this season after he spent the 2023 season with the New England Patriots. He finished that season with 184 carries for 642 yards and three touchdowns.
Before signing with the Patriots, he spent his first seven seasons with the Cowboys and rushed for 1,000+ yards four times.
He now returns to a Cowboys team that’s still trying to make a deep playoff run. They haven’t gotten to a Super Bowl since the 1995 season and are coming off another early playoff exit.
They lost to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
