Less than a year removed from an ACL tear, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is working his way back to the field.
On Thursday, the Cowboys placed Diggs on the physically unable to perform list. The All-Pro has been sidelined since suffering the season-ending injury before Week 3.
David Moore of The Dallas Morning News said earlier this week that the Cowboys would likely make this move. However, they still believe Diggs will be ready to play their season-opener against the Cleveland Browns.
Diggs had made back-to-back Pro Bowls, starting with an 11-interception campaign in 2022. He notched his 18th career pick in his last game, a 30-10 win over the New York Jets on Sept. 17.
In his absence, DaRon Bland returned five of his nine interceptions for touchdowns in an All-Pro season. Jourdan Lewis also remained a steady presence as a slot corner.
Dallas finished the 2023 season fifth in passing defense, but the Cowboys could boast the league’s most dangerous secondary if welcoming back a healthy Diggs.
Lewis is eager to see what his teammate will accomplish under defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
“I’m excited,” Lewis said Tuesday, per team reporter Patrik Walker. “He’s going to be his playmaking self, and I know that Zim is going to put him in position to make plays but, you know, Tre is going to put himself in position to make plays. He is definitely a savant of this game. He understands this game, and I really think he’s a genius at it, honestly.
“When he’s in true form, I feel like he’s one of the best defensive players in the game. … It’s amazing to see.”
