Trey Lance, Los Angeles Chargers, Agree to Contract
Trey Lance entered the final year of his rookie contract as the third option on the Dallas Cowboys quarterback depth chart. However, once Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury, Lance earned a spot as the backup to Cooper Rush and even earned a start in the regular season finale against the Washington Commanders. While he couldn’t pull out the win against the playoff-bound organization, he still completed 58.8% of his passes for 244 yards while adding another 26 yards on the ground.
Lance originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch moved heaven and earth to trade up for the right to select the North Dakota State product. Widely seen as a raw prospect with elite physical gifts, Lance spent his rookie season backing up veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. Ultimately, the rookie made it into six games (two starts) during his first season, completing 57.7% of his passes for 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.
The quarterback earned the Week 1 starting job in 2022 but suffered an injury after just two games. Garoppolo took over before suffering a season-ending injury of his own. This left the offense in the hands of seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy, who unexpectedly guided the team to the NFC Championship Game before leaving with an elbow injury.
Lance and Purdy entered the 2023 season fighting for the starting job. The seventh-round pick ultimately prevailed, and the 49ers decided to trade Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick. He remained the third-string quarterback all season and never saw game action.
Since signing his rookie contract, Trey Lance has appeared in 12 games while making five starts. While on the field, the North Dakota State product has completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,063 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions.
