Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is one of the top players in the 2025 NFL Draft class and should hear his name called early during the big event. Widely considered to be in the same category as elite prospects like Bijan Robinson, Ezekiel Elliott, and Saquon Barkley, Jeanty should be a first-round pick and could be eyeing the New Orleans Saints as his next home. Recently, the running back liked an Instagram post of former Saints running back Mark Ingram saying New Orleans should select him with the ninth overall pick and pair him with the aging Alvin Kamara.
Ashton Jeanty is a phenomenal player, and the Saints would probably love to draft someone like him in a perfect world. However, it’s hard to envision this happening. After almost a decade of consistently mortgaging the future, the Saints are staring down a long, painful rebuild with no long-term answer at quarterback and limited resources to improve the team. A great running back can be a good cherry on top of a Super Bowl contender, but it would be organizational malpractice for the Saints to invest so highly in a position with such a short shelf life.
However, just because he doesn’t make sense for the Saints doesn’t mean he won’t be a first-round pick. Several teams should be fighting for the right to draft Ashton Jeanty, with the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers being two of the top fits.
Ashton Jeanty Hints At Preferred Draft Destination
Historically speaking, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones does everything in his power to secure the running back position. In just the last decade alone, the famous owner used a top-five pick on Ezekiel Elliott, made him the highest-paid running back in football, and used the franchise tag on Tony Pollard in 2023. While the team went for the cost-effective route in 2024, that will probably change in 2025. Rico Dowdle is a free agent, and rather than spend up to re-sign the 1,000-yard rusher, Dallas could simply select one of the best running back prospects in recent memory.
Jerry Jones won’t shy away from using a first-round draft pick on a running back like Ashton Jeanty, and it’s hard to imagine first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer objecting. The longtime offensive coordinator has always operated a run-heavy attack, and pairing Jeanty with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb should give the Cowboys one of the best ‘big three’s’ in football.
Jim Harbaugh’s Vision
Nobody believes in the power of the run game more than Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh. Whether it’s with the San Francisco 49ers, Chargers, Stanford, or Michigan, the former NFL quarterback has always operated a run-heavy offense. Last year, the team continued to win games on the ground despite not having the best cast of running backs. J.K. Dobbins played well when healthy, but free agent signee Gus Edwards did not play up to his contract. With Dobbins set to test the open market, Los Angeles could move forward with Ashton Jeanty, one of the best all-around prospects to ever enter the NFL Draft.
The only question is whether Jeanty will still be on the board when the Chargers are on the clock. Los Angeles currently holds the 22nd overall pick, and elite prospects like Barkley, Elliott, and Robinson were all top-10 selections. Could Harbaugh justify trading up for a Ashton Jeanty, or will he wait back and invest in a different member of the stacked 2025 running back draft class.
