It’s not about winning or losing in the preseason; it’s about evaluation. The Cowboys walked away from their preseason Week 1 matchup with the Rams on the losing end of the scoreboard, 13-12, but left with plenty of film to evaluate. Poor throws made it difficult, at times, to fairly grade pass catchers. Yet those circumstances allowed players like 6-foot-2, 215-pound Kelvin Harmon to shine, soaring to make two above-the-rim receptions off somewhat errant throws.
Necessity also pushed Tyler Guyton into a position to shine. Chuma Edoga, the veteran place keeper at left tackle, exited with a foot injury. All Guyton did was show he’s up to the challenge of being the starting LT. The defense also pulled in four Stetson Bennett interceptions in their preseason opener. Credit is certainly due to the players who took advantage of those opportunities, but Bennett seemed to be the root cause of the turnovers, so every lesson learned should be taken with that grain of salt.
