Aside from a handful of players teetering on the bubble of a roster, preseason games are meaningless. To established players, a full contact exhibition game is all the risk with none of the reward. It’s why most coaches hold out their starters for most, if not all, preseason snaps. There’s no sense risking injury.
Obviously, Cowboys players like Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Zack Martin and others are protected throughout camp and held out completely from preseason games. They have nothing to prove and are far too vital to the mission to be put in jeopardy over the summer. The list of players deserving to be swaddled in bubble wrap should really be growing by the day. As players prove themselves, precautions should be put in place.
Across the NFL star players are dropping like flies. J.J. McCarthy, Jaymar Gibbs, Puka Nacua, Nick Chub, DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown, have already succumbed to injuries this summer. The Cowboys have had a couple of their own, notably offensive tackles Chuma Edoga and Earl Bostick. The situations serve as a reminder careers are fragile and unnecessary contact should be kept to a minimum.
It might be time for the Cowboys to update their bubble wrap list. Here are five more players who have proven enough and should be protected from unnecessary wear and tear this preseason.
