The SEC revealed its 2024 SEC Football Legends roster on Tuesday. Not all of the selections played in the SEC.
This year’s SEC Football Legends honors people “who excelled on the gridiron and helped write the rich history of the sport at their respective institutions.” The conference highlighted one player or coach from each of its 16 members, including newcomers Texas and Oklahoma.
Vince Young is among the SEC Legends who will be honored before the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. Oklahoma’s Barry Switzer is the group’s only coach.
Texas was a Big 12 member when Young led the Longhorns to their last national title in 2005. The quarterback concluded an epic college career by compiling 267 passing yards, 200 rushing yards, and three running scores in an instant classic 41-38 victory over Pete Carroll’s USC Trojans.
Young finished second in the 2005 Heisman Trophy voting to Reggie Bush with 26 passing touchdowns and 12 rushing scores. He left college with 6,040 passing yards and 3,127 rushing yards in three seasons before the Tennessee Titans made him the No. 3 pick of the 2006 NFL Draft.
Although Young is undoubtedly a college football icon, some fans will consider “SEC Legend” an odd label since he didn’t compete in the conference. Texas officially joined the SEC alongside its longtime rival to start the 2024 football season.
The SEC’s list of legends also includes Rex Grossman (Florida), Andrew Whitworth (LSU), Chase Daniel (Missouri), and Eric Berry (Tennessee). A “Weekend of Champions” will include an SEC Legends Celebration on Friday, Dec. 6.
