A massive tornado struck Texas late on Saturday evening, leading into Sunday morning, tragically killing five people.
The tornado struck the northeastern part of the state on Saturday evening. It damaged several homes and took down power lines, but most tragically, it took the lives of five people.
The Washington Post had more details, via Sheriff Ray Sappington of Cooke County.
“I hope we can find survivors, and we’re still trying hard,” Sappington said on WFAA early Sunday, adding that emergency responders found “major damage” to an area including a mobile home park, where search and rescue operations continued. He also said a highway travel center, where dozens of people had sheltered, was “mostly destroyed.”
The National Weather Service also issued tornado warnings throughout the night for parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri. Over 300,000 people across those four states and Texas were without electricity, according to Poweroutage.us.
A first-person video of the tornado has gone viral on social media. It’s pretty terrifying.
