Texas could have an enviable problem at quarterback, but Urban Meyer doesn’t see any controversy between Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning.
After leading the Longhorns to a 31-12 win at Michigan, Ewers left last Saturday’s game early with an abdomen injury. In his place, Manning accounted for five touchdowns in a 56-7 win over UTSA. Ewers is questionable for the team’s Week 3 game against Louisiana Monroe.
Meyer related to Steve Sarkisian’s situation on The Triple Option. The former head coach recalled fans clamoring for him to play Tim Tebow over Chris Leak at Florida
“Every time Tim Tebow would walk on the field, the place went berserk. They actually would boo when I put Chris Leak back in,” Meyer said. “I don’t think Texas is there yet, but I understand Arch is the crowd favorite.”
Even if the fans prefer Manning, Meyer said Texas should stick with Ewers once he’s healthy.
“Quinn Ewers is your starter, boys. Until [Manning] beats [Ewers] out. And doing well against Texas San Antonio? Yeah, that’s a warm-up. That’s a warm-up show,” Meyer said.
“Quinn Ewers has beat Alabama at ‘Bama. Quinn Ewers beat the Wolverines badly at Ann Arbor. He’s your starting quarterback. You got to play him. I’d play him. As soon as he comes back I’d play Quinn, and I’d play Arch.”
Ewers worked himself into the Heisman conversation when completing 73.4 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns before getting hurt. Yet observers are already wondering if the senior will get the Wally Pipp treatment after Manning averaged 24.8 yards per completion on Saturday.
While Ewers may not have permanently lost his job, Manning’s presence at least gives Texas every reason not to rush back the incumbent starter.
