Shelton Henderson, a top 40 junior out of Bellaire (TX.) and JL3 Elite, has seen a variety of looks across the recruiting trail as new interest comes in from Mark Pope and Kentucky, while longstanding offers remain at the top of his mind, he said after JL3 Elite’s 76-69 win Friday at the third Nike EYBL session in Indianapolis.
The 6-foot-6 wing scored 13 points in the victory. The University of Houston, LSU, and Texas have been in contact with the Houston native the most as of late.
Kentucky reached out about a week ago, as former Baylor assistant Alvin Brooks is now at Kentucky recruiting the 6-foot-6 wing under coach Pope. No offer is on the table yet.
He’s trying to plan out visits whenever there is free time, but the next step will be officials to Louisville, Texas, Houston, LSU, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, among others.
He broke down some of his options:
Houston: “They’re right down the street. They’ll be at my school probably twice a week, so I enjoy talking to them a lot. I’ve been to so many games, been on a visit there once, and trying to schedule an official soon. The atmosphere is crazy, and what they’ve built over there is crazy.”
LSU: “I love the atmosphere. I went on a visit in October. The coaching staff, I love talking to them. And, just being around the players, [seeing] what they talk about, how they enjoy themselves there and the structure they play in. I could definitely see myself playing there.”
Texas: I love coach [Rodney] Terry. He talks to me about how he can build me to where I want to be. I enjoy the conversations we have, especially with coach Brandon, he’s at my school a lot.”
Kentucky: “It’s still Kentucky even without [John] Calipari. The fan base and the legends they’ve put in the league, to the one-and-done, it’s still a blue blood.”
In terms of what he’s trying to display this summer, Henerson just wants the work to pay off and play with energy.
“I think just all the work that I put in I can now show to the people watching,” he said. “I play with a lot of energy, playing fast, get[ting] to the rim, and getting paint touches.”
