The Longhorns may need to turn to a walk-on punter against the Sooners.
The Wednesday injury report for the No. 1 Texas Longhorns head of Saturday’s matchup against the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas featured positive news regarding the status of redshirt junior starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, now listed as probable after missing the last two games with an oblique strain.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said on Monday that Ewers will start against Oklahoma barring any setbacks in practice this week.
Despite the benefit of a bye week, the injury situation at running back remains serious — super senior transfer Velton Gardner remains out with an undisclosed injury and junior walk-on Colin Page is listed as questionable after missing the Mississippi State game with his own undisclosed injury. That could leave Texas without four of its top seven running backs.
In addition to sophomore safety Derek Williams being listed as probable after missing three games with a hamstring injury, freshman punter Michael Kern is listed as questionable in his first appearance on the injury report. If Kern is not healthy enough to start, sophomore walk-on Ian Ratliff is listed as Kern’s backup on the team’s depth chart.

For Oklahoma, injuries at the wide receiver position remain a major storyline — four players are out for the Texas game and redshirt junior Deion Burks is listed as questionable.
