The Longhorns starter is officially listed as out for Saturday’s SEC opener.
The No. 1 Texas Longhorns will open SEC play on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Mississippi State Bulldogs without starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, who was listed as out on the official injury report released a little more than 90 minutes before game time.
Earlier on Saturday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Ewers was not expected to play.
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is not expected to play against Mississippi State today, per ESPN sources. A final decision will be made later in the day, as Ewers is nearly 70-percent and the coaching staff is prioritizing full health for Oklahoma. https://t.co/tBlT9HkTPA

Head coach Steve Sarkisian said on Thursday that he would make a decision about the availability of Ewers on Friday, but no official announcements came from the school and no information trickled out until Thamel’s report on Saturday morning and then the pre-game injury report.
Ewers suffered an oblique strain in the 56-7 win over UTSA two weeks ago and was listed as questionable on each of the first three SEC-mandated injury reports issued by the school.
So redshirt freshman Arch Manning will receive his second career start with the Bulldogs in Austin. Manning was sensational replacing Ewers against the Roadrunners, but threw two interceptions and struggled with his efficiency in the win over Louisiana-Monroe, showing some unsurprising growing pains.
Here is the injury report released by the school on Saturday.
