Patricia spent 15 seasons with Bill Belichick’s Patriots
The Texas Longhorns will open their 2025 college football season against the reigning national champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes. And with Ohio State’s hiring of Matt Patricia to lead the Buckeyes’ defense, the Longhorns know have a better idea of what to expect.
The Columbus Dispatch was among the first outlets to report the news.

Patricia spent 15 seasons with Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots, where, at one point, he acted as defensive coordinator before accepting the job as head coach for the Detroit Lions. With the Patriots, Patricia boasts a resume that saw him play a role in three Super Bowl wins, including the Patriots 2004, 2014, and 2016 championship campaigns.
From the Dispatch:
“Patricia was the defensive coordinator for two of those seasons, including for a Patriots team in 2016 that led the NFL in scoring defense during the regular season at 15.6 points per game. New England finished among the top 10 NFL teams in scoring defense in each of Patricia’s six seasons as defensive coordinator, from 2012-17.”
Patricia replaces former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who left for the same job at Penn State — however, Knowles is now the nation’s highest paid coordinator.
