The 2024 college football season will mark Texas’ first in the SEC.
Texas will play in college football’s best conference and will go against some of the top teams in the country.
To head coach Steve Sarkisian, this move was a long time coming. When he first heard about the move, he liked it because he thought the Longhorns were already building for it.
“So when they exposed it to me that we were going to the SEC, they said, ‘What needs to change?’ I said, ‘Nothing,’ because that’s what we were already building for anyway,” Sarkisian said, (first transcribed by On3 Sports).
Sarkisian’s thinking was that the Longhorns already had to build a roster that could beat some of the top teams in the SEC because they could see them in the College Football Playoff.
They’ll now have to go through some of those top teams if they want to win an SEC title and a CFP.
The Longhorns’ 2024 schedule includes games against the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners, and Texas A&M Aggies. There’s also a chance they play the Alabama Crimson Tide if both make it to the SEC Title Game.
The Longhorns will officially join the SEC on July 1.
