Not bad for the nation’s top-ranked team
The College Baseball Foundation recently announced watch lists for this year’s college baseball season, including Brooks Wallace Award and the National Pitcher of the Year Award, both of which included members of the Texas Longhorns’ current team.
For the Brooks Wallace Award, that includes Texas junior shortstop Jalin Flores.
From Texas Athletics:
“Flores has started all 36 games at shortstop for No. 1 Texas, batting .274 with nine home runs and 38 RBI. The San Antonio, Texas, native paces the Longhorns in doubles (16), extra-base hits (25) and multi-RBI performances (13), while ranking second on the club in RBI and total bases (83). As of April 18, Flores sits second in the Southeastern Conference in doubles, trailing only Florida’s Colby Shelton (18).”
Meanwhile, junior Max Grubbs and freshman Dylan Volantis landed on this year’s College Pitcher of the Year Award watch list.
From Texas Athletics, on Grubbs:
“After emerging as Texas’ ace a year ago, Grubbs has shifted into a key bullpen arm for the Longhorns. Across his first 12 outings this season, the right-hander has allowed six earned runs over 36 innings. The junior’s 1.50 ERA leads all qualified SEC pitchers (min. 36 inn.), while his six wins are tied for second in the conference.
From Texas Athletics, on Volantis:
“In his first year on The Forty Acres, Volantis has made a name for himself. The 6-foot-6, 212-pound southpaw has yielded only four earned runs in 33 1/3 frames, posting a 1.08 ERA and nine saves. In league play, Volantis has allowed just one run across 18 1/3 innings en route to being tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week twice.”
