Quinn Ewers wasn’t just a fan favorite coming out of high school because of his potential. People loved the five-star quarterback’s mullet.
When Ewers arrived at Texas, however, his long hair was no longer a thing. He also lost weight before winning the starting job.
During an appearance on Robert Griffin’s podcast, Ewers explained why he made such drastic changes in Austin.
“I never really had a season that had so many ups and downs like it did that first year. I knew something had to change,” Ewers said. “I think I brought that mentality of being in high school and being able to go out there and do whatever. But it’s a total different game. It took me a little too long to realize that, but I learned quick and took it in stride. I knew something had to change, so I started with the hair. I dropped weight and got in better shape so I can take hits better.”
Later in this interview, Ewers talked about how honored he is to be the starting quarterback of the Longhorns.
“Sometimes, I got to take a step back and take it all in,” Ewers said, via On3. “This is what I always wanted to do, this is where I always wanted to be. To have Sark trust me to run his offense and have my teammates trust me — it’s a pretty cool experience.”
Ewers was very efficient for Texas in 2023, completing 69 percent of his passes for 3,479 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Texas will need another big season from Ewers this fall in order to contend in the SEC.
