Matthew McConaughey is among those paying tribute to a beloved Texas Longhorns football figure on Monday.
The wife of legendary Texas Longhorns head coach Darrell Royal, who won three national championships and has a stadium named after him, passed away. Edith Royal was 98 years old.
“We lost a great one today with the passing of Edith Royal, the wife of our legendary football coach Darrell Royal. She was an iconic First Lady of Texas Football and an incredible Longhorn herself. We send our love and condolences to her family, friends and Longhorn Nation,” the T Association announced.
McConaughey, an avid Texas football fan, paid tribute on social media.
“one of the strongest women I’ve ever met moved on this morning. You will be missed Edith but more importantly, you will be remembered,” he wrote.
Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian also paid tribute to the Royal family.
“I did not get to meet Coach Royal, but I got a wonderful video message from Edith when I first got the job here that I still have,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “The impact that they’ve had here, not only at the University of Texas, but in Austin, the impact that Coach Royal had on the game of football itself.
“The fact that I get to sit in the same chair he did is pretty humbling. You know, it’s definitely an honor. Hopefully, we can go out and play a brand of football that he’d be proud of.”
May she rest in peace.
