There might not be a more visible and well-known Texas fan than actor Matthew McConaughey.
McConaughey, 54, is a Uvalde, Texas native and graduate of the University of Texas. He regularly attends Longhorn games, both at home and on the road, and was on the sidelines Saturday night watching his alma mater lose 30-15 to Georgia. The game was marred in part by an incident involving Texas fans who threw garbage onto the field to protest an official’s call during the second half.
The refs actually wound up picking up the flag, but the behavior ultimately cost Texas $250,000. In a statement released Monday afternoon, McConaughey admonished the responsible UT fans for their actions.
“First off, you were electric Saturday night when we hosted Georgia. Bravo. Let’s continue to bring it. Even though our Horns didn’t get the W, you created a measurable home field advantage,” McConaughey said.
“But let’s get real about the bottle bombing the field glitch we had. Not cool. Bogey move. Yeah, that call was BS, but we’re better than that. Longhorn Nation knows how to show up, show out like no other, and still keep our class.
“So, going forward let’s clean that kind of BS up and leave that behind us for good. We have to shake hands on that.
Now ranked fifth after falling from No. 1 following the loss, Texas will travel to take on No. 25 Vanderbilt this weekend. The Longhorns will then have a bye week before returning home to host Florida on Nov. 9.
“Next up, November 9th, when the Gators come to town, let’s make sure they feel the heat, can’t hear the play calls, and burn their timeouts — but remember, nothing hits OUR field except that Texas fight,” McConaughey told fans.
“Til then, Root hard and Hook em. McConaughey.”
