The MRI that Williams underwent on Saturday was precautionary.
Since Texas Longhorns junior right tackle Cam Williams left Saturday’s 38-24 win over the Clemson Tigers in Austin, the prognosis on his knee injury has been positive.
During an introductory press conference for the Peach Bowl on Monday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said that the MRI that Williams underwent on Saturday evening was merely precautionary and that the medical staff is “comfortable” with the injury.
“Again, it’s not as serious as we thought,” Sarkisian said.
As a first-year starter, Williams has struggled with penalties — according to Pro Football Focus, the 15 penalties committed by the 6’5, 335-pounder are the second-most nationally. But Williams has been effective as a run blocker and a pass blocker with PFF crediting him with three sacks and two quarterback hits allowed this season.
When Williams went out, redshirt freshman Trevor Goosby stepped in for him at right tackle, just as he did at left tackle when junior Kelvin Banks missed the SEC Championship game after suffering an ankle injury early in the regular-season finale. And just like Goosby did in the previous two game, he played well.
“I’ve got to give him a lot of credit — he’s held his own,” Sarkisian said. “He’s shown not only the physical fortitude, but I think the mental fortitude, the mental toughness, when he’s been going against some pretty elite players, so I’ve been proud of him.”
Sarkisian was also asked about junior wide receiver Isaiah Bond, who missed the Clemson game with an ankle injury that was aggravated against Georgia.
“Like I said going into last week’s game, I think Isaiah continues to make really good progress for us. Obviously, we’re quite a ways out, so my goal is coming out of Christmas here is that his progress continues in a positive direction, then we can see where it goes from there,” Sarkisian said.
