The Lone Star Showdown returns in primetime.
On Monday, the SEC announced that the high-profile matchup between the No. 3 Texas Longhorns and No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Central on ABC as the Lone Star Showdown returns to primetime in the first game between the longtime rivals since 2011.
With both teams facing one more opponent before the Horns travel to College Station, the stakes aren’t yet entirely clear, but right now Texas and Texas A&M are competing for a spot in the SEC Championship game as the Longhorns battle for a top seed in the College Football Playoffs and the Aggies linger on the edges of the new 12-team format.
The game renews a rivalry that began in 1894 and features a 76-37-5 edge for Texas. The Longhorns emerged victorious from the last meeting, a 27-25 win by Texas that saw the Horns score 17 third-quarter points before the Aggies rallied for three field goals in the fourth quarter. With time expiring, Texas place kicker Justin Tucker connected from 40 yards in one of the most iconic moments of the late Mack Brown era.
