But there’s a backstory, folks
Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy seems to getting along nicely with his new fan base at Duke.
During the Blue Devils’ win last weekend over ACC rival Virginia Tech, Murphy tossed an 86-yard touchdown pass that, in some ways, would decide the game’s momentum going forward. As part of his celebration, Murphy then turned to Duke-town and flipped them the birds.

But there’s a backstory to Murphy’s gesture. Ahead of Duke and Virginia Tech’s face-off, Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Jonathon Brewer told media, according to ESPN, that Murphy was more than welcome “to flick me off” if he threw a touchdown pass on a post route.
Then, come game time, voila. Murphy did exactly that.
Duke head coach Manny Diaz told media earlier today that Murphy is now facing in-house punishment. It remains unclear how, exactly, the program intends to punish its starting quarterback.
We’ll update you here if we happen to hear more.
