Arch Manning took the college football world by storm when he replaced an injured Quinn Ewers on Saturday.
Manning threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns and also added a 67-yard rushing score in Texas’ 56-7 win over UTEP. It is the former five-star recruit’s athleticism that differentiates himself from his famous uncles, Peyton and Eli, who were far from dual threats during their playing days.
Robert Griffin III, a prolific running quarterback in his own right in college and the NFL, couldn’t help but notice Arch Manning’s speed and crack a racially-inspired joke about it.
“The Black Delegation has drafted Arch Manning,” Griffin wrote.
For those unfamiliar, Griffin is referring to the famous “Racial Draft” sketch from Chappelle’s Show. The skit will be 21 years old in January, meaning some younger tweeters might have had no clue what RGIII was talking about.
Some people didn’t get the joke, while others most certainly did. Either way, Manning’s performance was incredibly impressive.
The second-year signal caller might get his speed from his grandfather Archie, a known scrambler when he played, or his dad, Cooper, who was regarded by many as the most athletic Manning brother before his college football career at Ole Miss was cut short by spinal stenosis.
Cooper, meanwhile, jokingly credited his wife Ellen, Arch’s mom, with blessing the boy with good wheels.
With Ewers still hurting with a strained oblique, it might be Arch Manning’s show for a while in Texas. The Longhorns appear to be in capable hands and feet.
