Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had four incredible years under center for the Longhorns. Arch Manning, on the other hand, is still waiting for his chance to shine.
Despite being one of the most popular recruits in the last few years, Manning spent his freshman season at Texas on the bench.
Instead of transferring to another school, Manning decided to run it back for the 2024 season. His return raised a few questions since he’s still behind Quinn Ewers on the depth chart.
On Friday afternoon, McCoy spoke to the media about Manning’s unorthodox start to his college career.
“It’s not normal in college football these days,” McCoy said, via Cory Mose. “A lot of these guys transfer, a lot of these guys want a chance to play, and that’s great. I think from Arch’s perspective, he’s working really hard, he’s learning a bunch from Quinn.”
McCoy ultimately believes Manning will benefit from having ample time learning Steve Sarkisian’s system.
“Arch is saying, ‘Yeah, I’m very comfortable here, where I’m at. Yeah, we all want to play but I’m learning, I’m growing so that when the ball’s in my hands when I get out there, I trust the system, I trust all this growth that I’ve made, and I’m going to go out there and play.’ I think he’s going to be well prepared for that, and it’s definitely an advantage for Texas.”
McCoy’s comments about Manning could age very well if the former five-star recruit lives up to the hype.
In the meantime, Ewers will run the show for the Longhorns.
